FAQ
What is Monki?
We're an all-natural sweetener brand that utilizes monkfruit. We are zero sugar, zero calories and all-natural.
What is monkfruit syrup?
Monkfruit syrup is a natural sweetener derived from the monk fruit, also known as Luo Han Guo in Chinese. It is extracted from the dried fruit and contains mogrosides, which provide intense sweetness without calories.
Does monkfruit syrup have any calories?
No, monkfruit syrup is calorie-free. It provides sweetness without adding any calories to your diet, making it ideal for weight management and reducing overall calorie intake.
What makes your monkfruit sweeteners different?
Unlike a lot of monkfruit sweetener brands, we are sweetened with just monkfruit. Other monkfruit sweeteners on the market have other ingredients such as Stevia, Erythritol or other artificial additives.
We try to keep the ingredients list of our products really clean and really natural. Our syrups include 4 ingredients: water, L-malic acid, monkfruit juice, and natural flavors for our flavored syrups. Our sachets only have monkfruit extract and inulin from chicory root unlike our counterparts that include Erythritol. Inulin is a dietary fiber that has many known benefits to your gut health. It's a prebiotic that feeds the good bacteria in your guts to support your entire gut health. We are entirely plant based and natural.
What is allulose, and what is erythritol?
Allulose and erythritol are sugar substitutes commonly used in food products. While they are generally recognized as safe by regulatory authorities, some people may experience digestive discomfort, such as bloating or gas, when consuming them in large amounts. Additionally, erythritol has been associated with negative effects on gut bacteria and thrombosis in some studies.
What’s so bad about erythritol?
Erythritol is a sugar alcohol and although it is labeled as all-natural, it only actually occurs in nature in very small trace amounts. Most erythritol that is consumed is actually made in a lab through biosynthesis. It has been noted that people tend to feel gassy or bloated after consuming it.
What is your production process?
The production process of our monkfruit includes taking the whole monkfruit, breaking it into pieces, and then soaking it so that the water extracts the solubles in the monkfruit juice. We take out all of the complex chemicals like sucrose, fructose, some protein, and some fats to make it zero calories, then we filter this liquid again. Once that’s done, we remove the complex flavors and colors, to make sure we are left with a very clean and clear sweetener.
Our entire production line uses an aseptic process which means that we keep the entire production line bacteria-free so we don't have to put our products through irradiation or other high intense antiseptic treatments later.
In your sachets, why add chicory root to the monkfruit?
Combining chicory root with monkfruit may offer additional health benefits. Chicory root is a good source of inulin, a prebiotic fiber that promotes gut health by nourishing beneficial gut bacteria. Monkfruit, on the other hand, provides natural sweetness without calories. Together, they create a sweetener that supports digestive health while reducing calorie intake.
Can I use monkfruit syrup in baking and cooking?
Yes, monkfruit syrup is very versatile and can be used in baking, cooking, and beverages. It can replace sugar in most recipes, but because it is much sweeter, you may need to adjust the amount used.
How is the monkfruit you use grown, harvested, and processed?
We work with the local farmers that still use their traditional methods of growing and harvesting monkfruit without the use of pesticides. We process the monkfruit with a water extraction process (similar to brewing tea) and filter out compounds with resin filters. No chemicals are added in any part of the process.
Who grows your monkfruit?
These farmers are often indigenous peoples from the Guangxi province in China who have passed down their farming techniques through generations, which includes hand-picking the fruit.
Is monkfruit syrup safe for diabetics?
Yes, monkfruit syrup is an excellent choice for diabetics. It has a glycemic index of zero, meaning it does not spike blood sugar levels. It also contains no calories, making it a safe and healthy alternative to traditional sugar.
Is monkfruit syrup suitable for a ketogenic diet?
Absolutely! Monkfruit syrup is keto-friendly as it contains no carbs or calories. It is an excellent option as a sweetener that won't affect ketosis.
Are there any side effects of monkfruit syrup?
Monkfruit syrup is generally considered safe with no known side effects. However, it is always recommended to consume any new food or sweetener in moderation and consult with a healthcare provider if you have any concerns.
